Director’s Statement
Director Zilla Barbosa on set in Hilo, Hawai‘i, at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Stadium filming Making the Line
As a Brazilian-American filmmaker raised in Hawai‘i, I tell culturally rich, emotionally resonant stories that amplify underrepresented voices and challenge dominant narratives. Rooted in Hawai‘i’s vibrant cultural landscape and shaped by my years in Los Angeles’s music and film scenes, my work explores the intersections of music, culture, sport, and identity through intimate, character-driven storytelling.
Making the Line, my debut feature documentary, marks a major evolution in this journey. Blending vérité realism with lyrical storytelling, it captures the sacred intensity of competitive Hula—both athletic and deeply spiritual. Guided by pono—respect and balance—I seek to honor tradition while pushing creative form and bridging generations.
What began as a self-funded passion project has evolved into a dedicated team poised to complete the film by December 2025 and share it with audiences worldwide in 2026. With Making the Line, I aim to create a work that honors Hawaiian history, reflects contemporary realities, and stands as a landmark in Indigenous nonfiction cinema for years to come.
